64-Megapixel Phone Cameras Are Coming
Samsung has announced a new image sensor for mobile phones with a higher resolution than anything comparable on the market. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 is a 64-megapixel sensor that uses the same 0.8μm-sized pixels as Samsung’s current 48-megapixel component, meaning it’ll be a physically larger sensor that can capture more light overall.
The Bright GW1 will produce 16-megapixel images by merging four pixels into one, like how existing 48-megapixel sensors turn out 12-megapixel photos by default. Samsung’s new sensor will also be able to descramble the color filter for full-resolution 64-megapixel shots in good light. Sony’s IMX586 48-megapixel sensor has a similar capability, but Samsung’s doesn’t; today the Korean company is also announcing an updated 48-megapixel part that offers the same feature.
48-megapixel cameras are now a common sight on phones: Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and others have all shipped devices with the sensors. Samsung expects its 64-megapixel part to go into mass production in the second half of this year, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the feature show up on spec sheets for late-2019 flagships — particularly if image sensor market leader Sony follows suit.

Samsung Galaxy M31 finally has a launch date in India. The next smartphone in Samsung's Galaxy M series will see the light of day later on February 25, amid the MWC 2020. A Galaxy M31 microsite, which is now live on Samsung India website, has also revealed the key specifications of the upcoming smartphone. The Galaxy M31 will come with a 64-megapixel main camera at the back, along with a mammoth 6000mAh battery under the hood. One of the variants for the Galaxy M31 comes in glossy Blue colour, as seen on the website.
The Samsung Galaxy M31, which succeeds the Galaxy M30, will be launched in India at 12 noon on February 25. It could be a soft launch though, where the event will just be live-streamed on the company website and the YouTube channel. This is also when the official pricing of the smartphone, along with launch offers will be announced.
Ahead of the launch, Amazon India has also listed the Galaxy M31 with its looks and all its major specifications. Apart from the 64-megapixel primary shooter and a 6000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 will also pack a full-HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U Display, the size of which has not been revealed. There will be a fingerprint sensor at the rear of the smartphone as well, the microsite shows. Also, the rear cameras will reside in a rectangular island with curved edges, much like the one seen on the recently launched Galaxy S10 Lite.
Some recent leaks have also suggested that the Galaxy M31 will be powered by an Exynos 9611 SoC with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, which could be expandable. To recall, the Galaxy M30s is also powered by the same processor.
Talking about the predecessor, the Galaxy M30 was launched in India in March last year. It comes with a 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, rocks an Exynos 7904 processor, and runs Android 10-based One UI 2. There are three cameras at the back - a 13-megapixel main sensor and two 5-megapixel snappers. For selfies, there is a 16-megapixel camera on the Galaxy M30. The smartphone is backed by a 5000mAh battery under the hood.
That being said, the specifications for the Galaxy M31 project it as a spruced-up variant of the Galaxy M30s. Not only the processor but the battery specifications of both smartphones seem similar, if we go by the information we have available for the Galaxy M31. Although, the camera could be a major upgrade.

Comedian and Ukraine President Takes Office, Dissolves Parliament
Comedian Volodymyr Zelensky stepped into his new role as Ukrainian president with his inauguration on Monday, launching a new era for the country wracked by war and economic difficulties.
A month after scoring a landslide election victory against incumbent Petro Poroshenko, the 41-year-old became Ukraine's youngest post-Soviet president.
In a ceremony in parliament, he placed his hand on a copy of the constitution and the Bible and pledged to "protect the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine."
He used his inaugural speech to announce that he is dissolving parliament, after wrangling with lawmakers in the lower house, in order to call early parliamentary elections, which had originally been scheduled for October.
"People must come to power who will serve the public," Zelensky said.
He also vowed that his first task was to bring a ceasefire in the conflict with Moscow-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine that has so far caused some 13,000 deaths.
Trump's 'Genocidal Taunts' Will Not End Iran - Zarif
Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has dismissed US President Donald Trump's "genocidal taunts" and warned him not to threaten the country.
With tensions rising, Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday: "If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran."
Mr Zarif said the president should look at history. "Iranians have stood tall for millennia while aggressors all gone... Try respect - it works!"
His warning to Iran was issued hours after a rocket was fired into the heavily fortified Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and hit a building about 0.5km (0.3 miles) from the US embassy.
Writing on Twitter on Monday, Iran's foreign minister said the US president was being "goaded" by what he called the "B Team" - a reference to US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
Mr Trump "hopes to achieve what Alexander [the Great], Genghis [Khan] & other aggressors failed to do. Iranians have stood tall for millennia while aggressors all gone. #EconomicTerrorism & genocidal taunts won't 'end Iran'," he added.
200 Ghanaians to Study Medicine in Cuba on Scholarship
Two hundred Ghanaian students are expected to leave for Cuba this year on scholarship to begin a six-year programme in medicine.
The opportunity is under an agreement between the governments of Ghana and Cuba, with support from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation.
The students comprise both undergraduate and postgraduate students from various schools across the country.
The Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, has consequently charged them to be prepared to work in remote areas of Ghana on their return to enable the country to attain an equitable distribution of health professionals across the country.
“The President wishes that the kind of services provided by the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is replicated everywhere in the country. "
South Africa is grappling with an ecological disaster after billions of tiny plastic pellets spilled into the sea when a container fell from a ship in the port of Durban.
The pellets, called nurdles, have now been washed up along 1,200km of coastline and are causing a huge threat to areas rich in wildlife. Here is John Sparks' report from South Africa:
Some people call them "high density plastic'" or "pre-production micro-plastic" but individuals in the industry refer to them as nurdles - a silly sounding name for a lentil-sized pellet that is the building block of all-known plastic products.
Your plastic bag from the supermarket? It's made from nurdles. Your daughter's dolly with the clip-on earrings and shoes? They are all moulded from nurdles.
Video:Coastline scarred by plastic pollution
Every single day, nurdles are shipped around the world in their billions and billions - just like any other cargo.
But nurdles are not "any other cargo" - a fact the people of South Africa are now learning to their detriment.
A major spill of these translucent pellets in the city of Durban has spread along 2,000 kilometres of coastline, proving virtually impossible to clean up - and the threat posed to marine and birdlife is incalculable, say leading environmentalists.
They may be small in size but their synthetic legacy that could last forever.
Image:The clean-up has been ongoing for over four months
Back in October, a freak hurricane bore down on Durban, ripping ships from their moorings and causing chaos in the port.
Propelled by wind power, two vessels belonging to the logistics-giant Mediterranean Shipping Company collided within the port's confines and containers holding 49 tonnes of nurdles went over the side.
Five days after the storm, local residents noticed that millions of plastic nurdles were washing up on beaches.
Video:Ecological 'nightmare' after nurdles spill
People started to call the regional environmental agency to complain but it was already too late - billions of these plastic pieces had already flowed out of the channel which leads to the sea.
Sobantu Tilayi, who is the chief operating officer of South Africa's Maritime Safety Authority, told us that the consequences of the spill came as a shock.
"We all work under standard operating procedures and we know what do when there is oil or explosives (but) nobody could tell what to do with nurdles. We didn't even know these things behave like this."
By behaviour, he means speed of movement. According to figures provided by NGO Wild Oceans, nurdles packed into two containers which fell off the MSC Susanna have now moved as far north as the border with Mozambique and all the way south to Cape Town.
Image:The MSC Susanna, seen in the background, was carrying the containers of nurdles
For hundreds of clean-up crews now charged with scrapping them off the coastline, it is the ultimate environmental nightmare.
We watched several hundred people tackle a stretch of coast line north of Durban near a place called Mtunzini and we soon noticed that the sand, pools and marsh lands were saturated with them.
As soon as one person tried to scoop half-a-dozen or so up, they were replaced by another gaggle of slippery, silvery pellets.
Video:Oodles of nurdles: What are they and why so bad?
The clean-up operation benefits from a highly-capable leader. Captain Nicolas Sloane, who helps run an organisation called Resolve Marine, is the man who righted the Costa Concordia back in 2013-but this nurdle crisis is a real test.
"We clean up one beach. It looks perfect (then) we have a spring tide, the sand migrates and blow me down, there they are again. It is not easy, and you cannot get despondent. We are recovering product."
But there is a long, long way to go. Of the 49 tonnes which spilt in the water, only 11 tonnes have been recovered - 23% of the total - and realistically, much of it will never be retrieved.
For environmentalists like Dr Andrew Venter, it is an unmitigated disaster. "We could be cleaning up in two or three years' time and we still won't recover all 49 tonnes of that particular load. It's not going to happen."
Image:Only 23% of the spilled pellets have been recovered
The repercussions for marine and bird life could be disastrous he says with multiple species misjudging toxin absorbing nurdles for food.
"From an environmental perspective, it is worse than an oil spill because (nurdles) won't break down. They last forever."
Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army fighters sit at a back of a pick-up truck near the city of Afrin, Syria February 21, 2018.
The Turkish army on Monday took control of the outer edge of Syria's Afrin region, state media said, as Ankara said it was readying for a "new battle" by deploying police special forces.
The military and allied Syrian rebel factions pushed some Syrian Kurdish YPG fighters back from the frontier near the Turkish border, effectively creating a "crescent" of control on Syria's side of the border, the state-run news agency Anadolu reported.
Since launching its operation in the northwest Syrian region, Turkey has captured 115 "strategic points" and 87 villages, Anadolu said.
The Syrian Kurdish YPG forces said Turkish warplanes had struck a village near Jandaris in the southwest of Afrin, killing five civilians.
A YPG-led alliance said its forces had responded in self-defense to Turkish attacks, and that fighting raged on multiple fronts around Afrin. Five Turkish soldiers were killed in the space of 24 hours, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, said Turkish troops now held a continuous strip on the edge of Afrin.
The advance opens a corridor that links territory in Aleppo province under the control of rebels backed by Turkey with the insurgent stronghold of Idlib province.
Ankara sees the YPG as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been waging an insurgency in southeast Turkey for three decades - though the groups say they are independent.
"NEW BATTLE APPROACHING"
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag told the broadcaster NTV that the deployment of police special forces "is in preparation for the new battle that is approaching".
Dogan news agency reported that gendarmerie and police special forces had entered Afrin from two points in the northwest, and said they would take part in urban fighting and holding villages that Turkish forces had seized.
Most of the larger towns in the region, including the town of Afrin itself, remain under YPG control.
Turkey says Saturday's U.N. Security Council demand for a 30-day truce across Syria does not apply to its offensive in Afrin.
"Some regions such as eastern Ghouta are part of the U.N.'s ceasefire decision in Syria, but Afrin is not one of them," said Bozdag, who is also the government spokesman. "The decision will not impact our Olive Branch operation ... in the Afrin region."
But French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday told Turkey the ceasefire did apply to Afrin.
The U.N. Security Council resolution demands all parties "cease hostilities without delay ... for a durable humanitarian pause for at least 30 consecutive days throughout Syria".
The cessation does not apply to military operations against Islamic State, al Qaeda and groups associated with them or other groups designated as terrorist organizations by the Security Council.
The PKK is branded a terrorist group by the United States and European Union as well as by Turkey, but the YPG is Washington's main military ally in northeast Syria.
Image captionDaisy's family said she was "the centre of our world".
Police have warned people not to donate to a fraudulent online fundraising account set up in the name of a six-year-old girl.
Daisy Dymyd was found unconscious at her home in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire on Monday and was pronounced dead at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
On Friday, her family told police a fake account purportedly set up by her uncle gathering donations for her funeral had appeared on JustGiving.com.
The account has so far raised £150.
'Don't donate'
A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "The family reported the account to us. It is still online but we're in the process of getting it taken down now."
The force said in a tweet on Friday: "A fake fundraising account has been set up, which is allegedly raising money for Daisy Dymyd's family.
"Daisy died earlier this week and her family ask for privacy at this difficult time. Please don't donate. Her family is not raising money and we are investigating. Thank you."
Image captionDaisy was found at home on Lincoln Road in Tuxford
The family said in a tribute on Thursday: "Our beautiful daughter was the centre of our world and we can't believe she's gone.
"She will be so missed by everyone that knew her. She was a such a happy little girl who lit up our lives and made the world brighter."
Nottinghamshire Police have said they will pass a file to the coroner and that no arrests have been made.
American Evangelist William Franklin Graham Jr, (Billy Graham) died this morning at the age of 99, at Montreat, North Carlifornia, home.
Billy Graham was an American evangelical Christianevangelist, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, who became well known internationally after 1949. He was widely regarded as the most influential preacher of the 20th century. He held large indoor and outdoor rallies; sermons were broadcast on radio and television, some still being re-broadcast into the 21st century. In his six decades of television, Graham was principally known for hosting the annual Billy Graham Crusades, which he began in 1947, until he concluded in 2005, at the time of his retirement. He also hosted the popular radio show Hour of Decision from 1950 to 1954. He repudiated segregation and, in addition to his religious aims, helped shape the worldview of a huge number of people coming from different backgrounds leading them to find a relationship between the Bible and contemporary secular viewpoints. Graham preached to live audiences of nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories through various meetings, including BMS World Mission and Global Mission. He also reached hundreds of millions more through television, video, film, and webcasts.
Graham was a spiritual adviser to American presidents and provided spiritual counsel for every president from Harry Truman to Barack Obama. He was particularly close to Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson (one of Graham's closest friends) and Richard Nixon. He insisted on racial integration for his revivals and crusades in 1953 and invited Martin Luther King Jr. to preach jointly at a revival in New York City in 1957. Graham bailed King out of jail in the 1960s when King was arrested in demonstrations. He was also lifelong friends with another televangelist and founding pastor of the Crystal Cathedral, Robert H. Schuller, whom Graham talked into doing his own television ministry.
Graham operated a variety of media and publishing outlets. According to his staff, more than 3.2 million people have responded to the invitation at Billy Graham Crusades to "accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior". As of 2008, Graham's estimated lifetime audience, including radio and television broadcasts, topped 2.2 billion. Because of his crusades, Graham preached the gospel to more people in person than anyone in the history of Christianity.[
Graham was repeatedly on Gallup'slist of most admired men and women. He appeared on the list 60 times since 1955, more than any other individual in the world. Grant Wacker reports that by the mid-1960s, he had become the "Great Legitimator":
By then his presence conferred status on presidents, acceptability on wars, shame on racial prejudice, desirability on decency, dishonor on indecency, and prestige on civic events.
University of Ghana Law Professor Raymond Atuguba has explained the complications that come with his work as a political and constitutional critical analyst.
The legal expert said the last time he analysed the work of the police with the intention of drawing their attention to some of their flaws, his house was besieged.
“Eight fully armed police officers were dispatched by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to come and arrest me from my office,” he told a gathering at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Thursday.
Professor Atuguba made the revelation after the findings of his latest research which focused on 100 political cases decided on by the Supreme Court provoked a backlash from senior judges.
The research analysed the voting pattern of judges on matters "where the law is not clear" and revealed their decisions were largely influenced by the political party that appointed them.
“Somehow, the Supreme Court lost its way after the first years and the judgments started becoming clear on the lines of party appointments,” he said.
Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo
But Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has dismissed the conclusion of the research, faulting its premise.
“Under the Constitution, a judge will be appointed during somebody’s time…and that somebody will belong to one party or the other,” she confronted Professor Atuguba at the event.
She said all that matters is for the ruling of the apex court to be in line with the law, sound and factual. She cautioned the law lecturer not to introduce alien practices into the Ghanaian setting.
In his reaction, Professor Atuguba said his research is aimed at finding a more sustainable way of scrutinizing the Judiciary and not to disparage it.
“I think the Judiciary can be the most dangerous but we must scrutinize judgment for their fidelity to the law…we must scrutinize judgment in the way judicial discretion has been exercised,” he said.
He was surprised at the negative reaction his work has received, revealing the last time he analysed the activities of the Ghana Police Service, some armed men were sent to arrest him.
He, however, did not mention the name of the IGP who directed his men to arrest him and the year this happened.
But “words are nothing to me,” an unfazed Professor Atuguba said.
